The Central Reserved Police Force (CRPF), the largest paramilitary force in the world, is currently facing a significant challenge in meeting the unprecedented demand for deployment of personnel on election duty during the upcoming parliamentary polls. With the April-June polling dates fast approaching, the CRPF has been forced to take drastic measures to meet the demand for troops.
Suspension of Training Sessions and Deployment of Sports Teams
Sources within the CRPF have revealed that the force has been compelled to suspend training sessions, cancel non-emergency leave, and even consider deploying troops from its sports teams to fulfill the demand for personnel. Despite their efforts to mobilize all available resources, the force is reportedly struggling to provide a substantial number of companies for election duties.
Increased Pressure Due to Multiple Simultaneous Elections
India is gearing up to elect the 18th Lok Sabha in seven phases of polling between April 19 and June 1. Compounding the challenge for the CRPF is the fact that Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim will also be holding Assembly elections simultaneously. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4, adding to the pressure on the CRPF to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process.
Measures Taken to Address the Shortfall
In response to the overwhelming demand for troops, the CRPF has implemented a series of measures to address the shortfall. The force has suspended ongoing training programs, directed central sports teams to spare personnel for election duties, and restricted the approval of leaves for troops except in cases of acute emergency. Additionally, the top brass is considering deploying specialized units to polling stations if necessary, although a final decision has yet to be made.
Utilization of Recruits and Existing Personnel
To supplement the shortage of troops, the CRPF is exploring the deployment of recruits who have undergone at least 22 weeks of basic training for security duties and administrative tasks at Sector Headquarters and Group Centers. Existing personnel at Sector Headquarters and Group Centers will also be diverted for deployment during the elections. The force is taking a multi-faceted approach to ensure that the demand for troops is met in a timely and efficient manner.
Focus on Critical Regions
The upcoming elections will place a particular emphasis on regions such as West Bengal, J&K, and Naxal-hit areas, where the need for heightened security measures is particularly acute. CRPF troops have already been diverted to these areas in preparation for the elections, underscoring the critical role that the force plays in maintaining law and order during this crucial period.
